Shaving the yak
TODO: add link once I've finished finding the authoritative source and clarified if the general usage implies it is a neccessary evil, or mindset borne of the assumption that such a neccessary evil will inevitably arise, based on previous encounters; but I can only do this all of this once I've confirmed the etymology of the word yak
